At about the age of sixteen, my steadfast love for performing Shakespeare’s dramatic works germinated a new passion: educating kids. From this passion I have striven to bring the magic of Shakespeare’s works to young artists, and found that the Bard’s plays are endlessly enriched when approached from the perspective of their young minds. For instance, an eleven-year-old girl played the goldsmith Angelo in a production of The Comedy of Errors that I directed last summer. Her Angelo was a neurotic, hot-tempered spaz case that reduced the audience to tears of laughter. In her I witnessed not creative potential, but true creativity in action.
When I move to Brooklyn this fall, I desire to similarly awaken the creative powers of the kids I work with. The arts are my thing: I have an extensive theater background as an actress and playwright. Beyond the theatre, I have been playing alto saxophone on and off for the past fourteen years and guitar for the past eight, and I also enjoy photography and painting. In a nutshell (as Hamlet would say) I love the arts and I love kids and I want them to be friends. I consider it a personal goal to awaken the creator within each young person that I have the privilege to spend time with—and, forsooth, have a great big ball of fun in the process.
