I grew up in a small town in Iowa, surrounded by teachers, family and friends that encouraged creativity. Since graduating from college, it’s been one of my goals to do the same for others. I’ve worked as a teaching artist in three states, encouraging young people to feel comfortable expressing themselves through performance. I would posit that growing up is a lot like training to be an actor, they both require that you be open and honest with yourself and engage the world around you with curiosity. As far as I’m concerned there’s nothing more fulfilling than learning alongside children.
Working with children I believe strongly in the importance of play. Games are a great way to teach kids rules and structure. I grew up playing baseball and basketball, and I still play soccer and ping-pong regularly. I also enjoy cooking, writing with my friends and listening to music. I try to encourage a welcoming, creative and joyful environment wherever I go and whoever I’m with, regardless of age.
