I grew up attending arts schools and I realized very quickly that I owed a great deal to the people around me who encouraged creativity in my life. I started working with kids to return that favor and found an admiration for the scrappiness of kids (often in the face of great odds). I studied directing in college, focusing on working with young writers and new plays. While I did that, though, I always kept kids in my life, working with them in several different capacities from mentor to sitter to teaching assistant.
While sitting or nannying, I love staying away from screens and being active — whether that means drawing with sidewalk chalk or playing sports. Playing catch with a kid is a great way to get fresh air while getting them to open up about who they are, what they’re feeling, what their problems are. I’ve helped kids discover the creative side that they didn’t know was there, realize that video games are NOT the best way to have fun, and learn that being honest with themselves and others can be very cool.

I love anything that encourages a kid's creative approaches to problems. And to me that can be anything from arts and crafts to (yes) math! Being active with kids is important to me - playing catch, playing basketball, racing, throwing any kind of ball/frisbee. I think all stories are great, so I encourage reading as a communal effort. And I think everyone can learn more about how honesty and humor can be used in daily life.
