I am a fun, creative, nurturing young woman who loves children. I bring with me 20 years' worth of enriching experience to the families I work for and I truly enjoy becoming 'one of the family'. There are many reasons why I am a career-nanny, but most importantly, I LOVE children and I love to play! The feeling that I've have had a positive effect on a child by helping them grow, learn, and develop their sense of self-esteem is extremely gratifying. It's truly the best feeling when a child enjoys my company as much as I enjoy theirs! I love working with parents to see to it that their children are happy, healthy, and reaching developmental milestones in the style that is right for them and reflects their family values.
I have had a long history working with children of all ages, from just a few weeks old, to 15 years of age. The prevailing wisdom of this human experience, for me, has been that empathy is really all that is needed to take care of another being. It is vital in sustaining relationships with families, and is the key to managing any situation regarding the needs of the child in front of you or the parent on the phone. I see the common thread between infants, toddlers, school-age children, pre-teens, & teens as a recurring cycle of growth and change and feel it is partly my responsibility to work with parents to make sure their child is supported during those important transitions.
In addition to providing consistency, routines, and rewards, the role of a nanny can have a lasting impact on a family as a whole and especially on a child's life. For me, nannying is about bridging the gap in between working parents and their children. It is important to me to meet the needs of those parents who find that there aren't enough hours in the day, but who want to be connected to and included in what's going on.
I will be SmartSitting while...
When I'm not nannying, my down time is usually spent reading everything from music blog posts, to political columns, to culinary magazines, to listening to FreshAir Podcasts. I love my home and maintain a relaxing, harmonious environment and enjoy cleaning, cooking, and doing laundry--yes, actually doing laundry. I like using natural soaps, essential oils, and creating my own holistic elixirs and Ayurvedic philosophy to remedy any ailments and I especially enjoy shopping for those items and ingredients at Farmer's Markets. I love Pilates, walking, going to hear music (classical, folk, jazz, popular), playing guitar, watching Poldark & Sherlock or anything on PBS, cooking, swimming, playing music with friends, spending time with my nephew, shopping, and writing YA short stories and mini-picture books for small children.
In 5 years, I hope to be...
5 years from now I see myself having a family of my own, traveling with them, and writing children's books and screenplays.
Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...
I've logged in 10,000+ hours in children's library reading rooms in Manhattan and Boston, not only reading to my charges on a daily basis, but signing off on their school reading logs. I also have a very soft spot and talent working with infants, smaller children, and toddlers moving into school age. I love teaching them the alphabet and working with them on developing their language skills through sounds, words, identifying, and teaching them to read simple sentences, sometimes ahead of kindergarten. I find the imagination of a small child to be fascinating and my ultimate compatibility when it comes to teaching, learning, and playtime!
I also enjoy working on developing music skills with children and love playing guitar and teaching them songs. It's a great way to bond with them and gives them a chance to express themselves. It's a way of establishing the sense that they have outlets to deal with their strong emotions as well. I feel that once they do that they also feel more confident and comfortable in those feelings and know how to ask for things rather than feel out of control.
