My love for working with children started when I was a kid going to theatre camp every summer. The bonds that I formed with my fellow cast mates were irreplaceable and inspired me to continue my camp experience, evolving into a CIT and eventually a counselor, and I have been working with kids ever since. After earning my BFA in musical theatre, I moved to NYC and started nannying part-time and teaching theatre and voice to kids.
One of the best experiences I have had with children was a performance of the first show I had been solely responsible for creating. Although I had worked with children for years as a nanny, it was a whole different experience teaching and leading children to a big performance. It was quite different than the living room renditions of some favorite Disney songs by some of the kids I had nannied, some of which were Oscar worthy in my opinion! This was “audience, places, LIGHTS!” I was so nervous for them, but the moment before they hit the stage I said, “just have a blast, don’t worry if you mess up, trust yourself and most importantly have fun!” They all ran out on stage and the music started and off they went. I remember watching from the wings, and you would think each and every one of them was my own child, I was so proud! I felt my heart start to burst, and my chin start to wobble and I knew I was witnessing something so special. I watched even the shyest of these kids find something in them they didn't even know they had. They were confident, proud, and perfect. Even if they made a small mistake, they were perfect because they were having fun and completely uninhibited. The highlight for me in any form of childcare is watching a child’s growth and seeing the moment where they feel ultimate confidence. It has easily become the most gratifying experience of my life, and to know that I may have had even a small part of making that happen is invaluable.
I find it to be a huge asset that I got my start working with kids at a musical theatre camp. As a nanny, it helps me put extra value in creating a really fun and playful relationship with kids. I believe in cultivating a safe and structured yet always playful and creative environment. My priority is that they are free to express themselves while still remaining respectful to those around them. I'm an advocate of imagination and play and never losing that with age, which is why I think kids are just the best! I have been a babysitter for infants and 12-year-olds and every age in between, and I enjoy different aspects of each age. Since I am an artist, I love to get creative with projects and I have a very outgoing and extroverted person. I love being around kids and getting to be a part of their growth into little humans with their own individual personalities and identities.
