I have worked, for at least 15 years, with youth of all ages. During this time I have resided and studied in South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. I have always had tremendous passion for childcare and education.
Like many, I came to New York for graduate school, and I couldn’t seem to leave the city. I stayed to write and teach. My background is in creative writing, education, community development and the arts (musical theatre, dance, film, visual arts, and crafts). The later includes studying Integrative Arts therapy in London for a year.
Over the years, I have nannied, taught and co-taught pre-school (including Montessori), summer high school and undergraduate creative writing. For the last two years, I taught and mentored students with learning differences, at a private middle/ high school in Manhattan. I loved it! Now I'm taking some time off to nanny, tutor and work on creative projects.
I have worked any number of jobs while I write, but always come back to caregiving. I love how curious, funny, honest and creative children can be. They keep me energized, uniquely engaged with the world, and I get immense satisfaction from contributing to the many stages of each child's learning and development. As far as nannying goes, I particularly enjoy family dynamics and being part of team. I'm one who thinks it does indeed "take a village" to raise happy, healthy human beings.
Lastly, I'm a strong advocate for child-centered learning and imaginative play, and like many parents, I believe you are never to young to start building critical thinking skills and positive social interactions. I learned a great deal about sharing these skills while working with special needs students. Some of the activities I enjoy sharing are: reading, making up stories, playing games and singing songs, exploring the city, the great outdoors, and making art and craft projects galore!
