I have had a natural instinct for caring for others since I was a very young. I remember comforting the kids in my kindergarten classes when they were sad, and coming up with special games to play with the kids at my summer camp who felt left out. Though I'm now an adult, I honor the playful child who is still in my heart. It brings me great joy to serve families by bringing my spirit of fun, creativity, responsibility and caring into their homes.
I have been fortunate to have worked with young people of all ages throughout my life: I started when I was in seventh grade, and went on to become an assistant teacher at a theater camp for children ages 4-16. After college, I worked with families in both Manhattan and Brooklyn, caring for their children after school and on weekends. I have just completed an M.F.A. in acting at my dream school, the Yale School of Drama, and now that I'm back in New York, I am eager to return to my other passion, working with children (and dogs!).
Collaborating with your family, I will bring an upbeat, positive attitude into your home, and will also create a safe, structured, and secure environment for your children to learn. I am fun but firm: your kids will play games and fun, but they will also get their homework done and be tucked in by bedtime. I have tutoring experience and can assist your youngsters with math, English, and languages. I also love dogs, and would be happy to play tug-of-war with your pups and take them for walks. I nurture and respect my own home, and can assure you that I will do the same for yours.
I will be SmartSitting while...
When I'm not babysitting, I'm usually auditioning. Since I just graduated from an acting program, my agents are sending me out during most weekday mornings to audition for everything from TV and film to New York and regional theater. It's exciting most of the time and exhausting at others.
I also love yoga and running, knitting and crossword puzzles, reading new fiction and watching my favorite TV shows (Breaking Bad, Mad Men, House of Cards). I also love to cook simple and healthy meals for myself and others.
My friends and family are so important to me. When I'm in between auditions or home for the evening, I make sure to call them to check in.
In 5 years, I hope to be...
In five years I hope to be making a comfortable living as an actor and singer, and on my way to starting a family of my own.
I intend to stay in New York a minimum of two years, especially since my parents and siblings all live in the city and the surrounding areas.
I am open to continuing to work with families on a long term basis. One of the rewards of babysitting is watching the children I work with grow into amazing and mature young adults!
Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...
I believe the most important lessons in life are learned through experience. I will be sure to get the kids out into the world, imagining, dreaming, and interacting with others. If I'm cooking or cleaning, I may ask the kids to help me in gentle and safe ways. If they ask me questions, I usually ask them what they think before I answer them. I don't talk down to kids: I think they often have more to teach me than I have to teach them. I always prefer to have a person-to-person conversation instead of an adult-to-child lecture.
If it isn't already clear, I love theater and performing. I like to credit myself with turning the last boy I sat for on to Shakespeare. One night as I was putting him to bed, I started telling him the story of Hamlet. He was riveted. After a few months, I had shared with him the stories of many other Shakespeare plays. He also made fun of me because I used a lot of accents and funny voices in my interactions with him.
In tough moments, when your child is upset, hurt, or frustrated, I will be present and handle conflict with respect and care. If a boundary has been crossed, I will explain how I feel to the child and we will have a discussion about it. If discipline is necessary, I will take those actions according to your family's preferences.
Above all, I believe in young people and think they are amazingly creative, insightful, and beautiful. In serving your family, I hope to encourage and celebrate these qualities in your kids.
