Nanny Relief Fund was launched in April 2020 when the COVID-19 epidemic amplified the many inequities in the world of domestic employees, and the lack of protections and support accessible to nannies.
The last couple of months have been a struggle for everyone, and unfortunately the nanny community has been greatly impacted. Many nannies are unable to work right now and are struggling to make ends meet and have lost income, healthcare, and homes, without a clear sense of when they will be able to return to work. The stories in our community right now are heartbreaking, particularly considering that for many of us, nannies make our lives and careers possible. The core of a nanny’s job is to encourage and support the budding dreams of so many tiny humans in their most vulnerable moments of life. Over the course of this pandemic, nannies have been faced with the stark reality that the compassion and safety they have given to so many families is nowhere to be found in their own time of need.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are over 1.1 million nannies currently working in the United States. This group is made up of 98% women (according to a survey by the International Nanny Association), has a high proportion of people of color, and represents many different countries of origin. Unfortunately, over 90% of nannies are not paid legally, or paid ‘on the books’ by their employers, and many have been critically impacted financially during this pandemic. For those nannies who are paid "under the table" or misclassified as independent contractors, unemployment, paid sick leave, and expansions of the Family Medical Leave Act are often not available. The choice of employers to not provide their employees lawful protections leaves many nannies financially vulnerable.
We have been touched by the many stories shared over the last few weeks, which is why we are thrilled to be supporting a new non-profit created by members of our industry: the Nanny Relief Fund. Like so many other industries, this fund exists to provide tangible support to nannies in need. The fund received over $65,000 in donations from nannies and agencies in our community in its first week, which is unprecedented in our industry. During the same time, over 900 nannies have signed up to apply for relief. This means the need is too great for our small community to support on our own. We are reaching out to our community to ask for help in growing the Nanny Relief Fund. Here are a few ways in which you can join us in our efforts to help support this very necessary charitable organization:
I know how much you respect and support your nanny, and hope you will join me in this effort to provide help to an all-too-deserving and underserved community.
