Born and raised in Saint Louis, Missouri, I am a Midwesterner at heart, but fell in love with the city after I attended Barnard College and decided that I needed to stay in New York to attend Social Work School at NYU. This past year I volunteered in a predominantly Ethiopian community, teaching English in the local high school, tutoring individuals one-on-one, working in the local community garden, volunteering at the local residential facility for young people with special needs.
This past summer I worked as a counselor at Trailblazers, a camp that targets inner-city kids many of whom possess behavioral or social issues who usually have had very little exposure to the outdoors with the aim of building community through engaging in non-competitive sports and team building activities as well as developing and honing in on hard skills such as biking, canoeing, swimming, fishing, and hiking. I also worked as a counselor at Ramah in Wisconsin for three consecutive summers where I was responsible for ensuring the well-being and safety of between 12-15 campers while leading and organizing social and religious programming. My experience working with children has helped remind me to not just engage with kids’ imaginations, but also help expand their imaginations. I believe it is of the utmost importance to be constantly probing, asking questions, and challenging their pre-conceived notions.

I spent this past year volunteering in Israel and am a proficient Hebrew speaker and reader. I enjoy swimming and love teaching children how to swim. I worked as a lifeguard for several weeks last summer.
As a former camp counselor, I also have a lot of fun games to play on the spur of the moment, especially with small groups of kids, such as the counting game where the kids try to count 20 in a random order without any of them speaking over one another or where the wind blows, where kids must form a circle and switch places with one another in the circle based on criteria that the person in the middle of the circle calls out.
I also love spending time outdoors from going to parks to going on hikes. This past summer I had the opportunity to lead several 2-3 day hikes on the Appalachian Trail and canoe trips down the Delaware River as a counselor at Trailblazers and I learned how to engage kids with the nature around them in a fun, creative way.
