2026 Photo Guidelines

You give so much of yourself to the children in your care, but in the moments before a family knows you, it's hard to show the depth of what you bring. Great photos (not perfect photos!) bridge that gap. They let families see the warmth, professionalism, and care you offer every day, helping you get hired for work that truly matters.

This guide will help you create a profile that communicates trust, warmth, professionalism, and joy.

Main Photo

This is your first impression. Choose a photo where your warmth and professionalism shine through: a genuine smile, good lighting, and a clear view of your face. This photo says, "I'm approachable, I'm capable, and I care." Aim for great, not perfect!

  • Shoulders or waist-up shot (a quick photo outdoors with your phone’s front camera is great)

  • Plain, solid-colored clothing preferred (black, white, or soft pastels)

  • Natural, genuine smile

  • Clean, uncluttered background

Support Photos

These photos show who you are beyond the surface. When parents can see your interests and personality, you stop being a stranger and become someone can imagine welcoming into their home. These photos don't need to be perfect. they just need to be real, showing the human behind the caregiver. Once again, aim for great, not perfect! Here are some great ideas:

  • Major life highlights (graduation, a big trip, holding a newborn, etc)

  • Engaging in hobbies like hiking, baking, etc.

  • Travel photos and outdoor activities or park visits

  • Reading or playing children (with permission, faces concealed)

  • Family or community gatherings (with permission)

Checklist

Ask Yourself:

  1. Is the photo bright and clearly visible? Are the backgrounds calm and tidy?

  2. Are you dressed neatly and modestly? Is this wholesome and appropriate?

  3. Does this show warmth, safety, fun, or strong caregiving values?

  4. Did you avoid super close crops of your face, mirror selfies, car selfies, and selfies in general?

  5. Is the resolution high enough so you don’t look pixelated or fuzzy when you zoom in?

Tips: You Don't Need a Professional Photographer

Great photos don't require expensive equipment, just a little intention. If your current photos aren't working for you, grab your phone and head outside where the natural light is flattering. Ask a friend or family member to take a few shots while you relax and smile naturally. You can use AI tools in Canva or Google Gemini to clean up backgrounds or enhance lighting, but stay true to what you actually look like. Families are looking for the real you, and authenticity builds the trust you need to get hired.
