Best part-time nanny placement services for shifting schedules

a melting clock symbolizes families with shifting schedules looking for a nanny

Not every working parent has a predictable Monday-through-Friday schedule. Maybe you're an ER doctor or nurse working rotating shifts, a surgeon who takes call, a pilot or flight attendant whose schedule changes monthly, an attorney heading into trial, a consultant who travels regularly, or an executive whose workday doesn't reliably end at 5.

But having an irregular schedule doesn’t mean you can’t hire a regular nanny. The key is finding a caregiver, as well as a childcare arrangement, designed around the reality of your schedule from the beginning. Here’s how to do it – and five childcare agencies/platforms that will help you get it done.

How to hire a nanny with a shifting schedule

The more flexibility you need, the more important it is to offer your nanny stability in return. This baseline set up can get you a long way:

  • Guarantee a minimum number of hours. If your nanny needs to keep substantial availability open for you, guarantee a weekly minimum. Pay additional hours, including applicable overtime, as needed.

  • Compensate accordingly. The most successful flexible arrangements we’ve seen included a premium hourly rate for the nanny’s flexibility. They’re more likely stick around and accommodate your needs when that flexibility and ease are compensated appropriately.

  • Complement with backup care. Keep your nanny on a predictable schedule and use trusted temporary nannies or sitters when an unexpected shift, call or trip falls outside it.

If you receive your shifts only a week or a few weeks ahead, agree in advance on when you'll provide each new schedule.

Further out of the box:

If your schedule and needs are too complicated for any sort of regular caregiver schedule, you may want to consider setting up a roster of part-time, as-needed sitters who can jump in at a moment’s notice.

The downside is that it may be a lot of work for you to scramble at the last minute, texting ten different sitters and hoping one of them is free. A childcare agency, temp service or corporate backup care arrangement may be your best friend here.

Whatever the arrangement, be explicit during the hiring process. Guaranteed hours, appropriate compensation and realistic expectations give you a much better chance of finding someone whose availability genuinely fits (and building a relationship that lasts!).

Top nanny placement services for shifting schedules

Smart Sitting

We have to be up front: as a New York City-founded childcare agency, we’ve always had to be at the forefront of figuring out how to help parents who need flexibility find their caregivers. So we couldn’t make this list without putting ourselves on it.

Smart Sitting offers full-time and part-time nanny placements as well as short-term, fill-in and on-demand childcare. That makes it possible to look for a consistent nanny while also having a solution for some of the gaps a shifting schedule can create. Plus, our personalized matches and hands-on process means we can vet nannies and set expectations based on your unique needs so no one is surprised come hiring day.

Pros: Personalized matching, professionally vetted caregivers, part-time placements and temporary/backup options.

Things to consider: A higher-touch agency model generally makes most sense for families who value having someone else manage much of the recruiting and matching process rather than conducting a DIY search. Smart Sitting also mainly places caregivers in urban settings and may not be available in your area.

The Nanny League

The Nanny League caters to families looking for professional nanny placements, including full-time, part-time and temporary care. Its experience with demanding and high-profile households may make it particularly relevant when travel, long workdays or unusual schedules are part of the job.

Pros: High-touch placement process and experience with complex household requirements.

Things to consider: Part-time placements generally need to offer at least 20 hours per week, so it may not suit a family that only needs a handful of changing hours. Its high-touch placement model also comes with agency fees that are substantially different from joining a childcare marketplace.

Bell Family Company

Bell Family Company offers full-time, part-time and temporary nanny placements alongside a separate sitter service, making the combination of regular nanny + backup sitter particularly relevant for shifting schedules.

Pros: Both longer-term placements and flexible sitter care, with a strong presence in the New York area.

Things to consider: Bell's on-demand sitter services aren't available everywhere. While Bell has a strong reputation for families, online discussions among caregivers are mixed, which may affect your experience as well.

Care.com

Care.com, a behemoth in the childcare space, offers access to a very large pool of caregivers, including part-time nannies and occasional sitters. That breadth can be useful if your schedule requires several different types of coverage rather than one conventional nanny position.

Pros: Large caregiver pool, broad geographic reach and the ability to search for both regular and occasional care.

Thing to consider: Care.com is a marketplace rather than a traditional nanny placement agency. You're largely responsible for sorting through candidates, interviewing, checking references and determining whether someone can realistically accommodate your changing schedule. TL;DR – it’s a lot more legwork for the parent.

British American Household Staffing

British American Household Staffing (BAHS) specializes in staffing private households and is particularly relevant for families looking for experienced career nannies or caregivers accustomed to demanding schedules, travel and complex household needs.

Pros: High-touch recruitment geared toward private and high-net-worth households, with temporary as well as permanent staffing.

Things to consider: This is a luxury household staffing agency rather than an on-demand childcare platform. If your main concern is finding last-minute sitters whenever your shifts change, its staffing model may be more extensive (and likely more expensive) than you need.

Finding the right childcare fit for an unusual schedule

There isn't one childcare arrangement that works for every shifting schedule. Some families need a flexible full- or part-time nanny with guaranteed hours; others are better served by a consistent nanny plus a reliable bench of temporary caregivers.

The important part is building the job around your actual life rather than trying to squeeze an unpredictable schedule into a conventional nanny position.

At Smart Sitting, we've helped families think through exactly these kinds of childcare puzzles – from finding a long-term part-time nanny to filling the gaps with trusted temporary care, and we know how to set up a position from the start that has everyone on board and happy.
