From Care.com to Bambino - here’s how to get a nanny job through an online platform

Finding a job on an online platform requires a bit of skill

In a way, looking for work as a nanny in the digital age has never been easier. In our comprehensive guide to finding a nanny job, we’ve listed several different avenues you can take, one of which is online platforms/listing service, and there are several large online platforms specifically designed to help you land your next job. However, with so many to choose from, it can be pretty overwhelming to determine which one is best for you.

In this post, we will dig deeper into five popular online platforms for finding nanny jobs: Care.com, Sittercity, UrbanSitter, Sitter.com, and Bambino. We believe that when you are armed with insight about each platform, the pros and cons of finding a job this way, and how to use its functionality to your advantage, you’ll have a smoother path to your next job.

Pros and Cons of Using Online Platforms for Finding a Nanny Job

As with any job search tool, there are upsides and downsides to using online platforms to find a nanny job.

Pros:

  1. Large pool of potential employers: These platforms host thousands of families actively seeking childcare services, providing you with lots of opportunities to find a job that fits your skills and preferences. This is true both for the large metropolitan areas and smaller towns where you may not, for instance, have the ability to work with a nanny agency.

  2. Easy tools for background checks and references: Having your background checks and references in one place can make the application process easier and give potential employers a chance to quickly see your professionality.

Cons:

  1. Costs for nannies: Most platforms offer free basic memberships, but the premium features that increase your visibility and access to more job postings come at a cost.

  2. Limited customization in the job search process: These platforms provide a generalized search approach and may make it harder for you to filter specific job preferences.

  3. High competition: With the large number of nannies using these platforms, standing out to potential employers can be challenging, especially if there are limitations to how you can customize your profile.

  4. Difficulty in verifying families: While these platforms often verify nannies, the verification of families is less common. In short, you’ll be responsible for your own safety and confirming that families and job offers are legit.

The 4 most popular platforms for childcare - and how much they cost

Care.com

Care.com is arguably one of the most recognized online platforms for finding nanny jobs. To join as a nanny, you need to create a profile detailing your experience, skills, and availability. The platform also encourages you to upload references and undergo a background check to increase your credibility.

Costs: While creating a basic profile on Care.com is free, you are required to pay for a basic annual background check. There's a premium subscription that gives you higher visibility and access to more job postings, which also includes the cost for the basic background check. This subscription costs around $10-20 per month, depending on how long you want to commit. You can also pay extra for so-called credits, which allow your application to be one of a select few to be seen by the potential employer.

Sittercity

Sittercity, another well-known platform, also requires you to set up a profile with your experience, skills, and availability. The platform also recommends completing a background check.

Costs: Sittercity provides free access to their job postings. They also offer a Featured sitter option that costs $14.99 per month and boosts your profile visibility to potential employers. This membership fee also includes a basic background check.

UrbanSitter

UrbanSitter takes a slightly different approach by integrating social connections into its platform. As a nanny, you can create a profile, list your experience and qualifications, and connect with families through mutual connections. This strategy can provide an extra layer of trust and familiarity for both you and the family. They also have an authentication process for families, which can offer sitters extra peace of mind. UrbanSitter gigs are booked through the app and may be more convenient for babysitting gigs.

Cost: UrbanSitter requires an active membership, which costs $35/year and includes the cost of a background check.

Bambino

Bambino is another mobile app that connects nannies with parents in their local communities. To join, you need to download the app, create a profile, and add at least two references. Unlike other platforms, Bambino verifies your references before you can begin applying for jobs. You’ll also be able to see if a family has previous verified bookings through the app, adding extra confidence. Bambino is mainly used for babysitting gigs and allows sitters as young as 13 to join, making it a great option for younger sitters but maybe not the place to go for seasoned, career caregivers.

Cost: Bambino is free for sitters. They recommend getting a background check, costing $14.95.

Things to keep in mind when looking for a nanny job via online platforms

Online platforms have definitely made job searching more streamlined and convenient. However, it's essential to keep a few key points in mind to ensure your safety, validate the authenticity of potential employers, and find the right fit for you. Here are some guidelines to navigate these platforms efficiently and securely.

Safety Precautions

Your safety should always come first. While these platforms often have a few safety measures in place, it's crucial to take additional precautions.

  1. Never share personal information: Avoid sharing your home address, social security number, or bank account details until you have a signed contract for a longterm gig, and probably never for a short-term or babysitting gig. If a potential employer is insistent on getting these details early, consider it a red flag.

  2. Meet in public places: For your initial meet-up with potential employers through online platforms, choose a public place. Maybe meet over a coffee or at the playground. Only visit the family's home when you're comfortable and have verified their authenticity.

Verifying Families

Since online platforms mostly focus on verifying the sitters for the families, you as a caregiver don’t have much support from the platform itself. However, there are a few things you can do to uncover red flags when connecting with a family.

  1. Look for reviews and ratings: Most platforms allow families to be rated or reviewed by nannies they've hired before. This feature can give you a sense of their credibility.

  2. Ask for references: Don't hesitate to ask potential employers for references. Speaking to nannies they've previously worked with can provide valuable insight.

  3. Trust your instincts: If something seems off during your communication with the family, it's better to be safe and seek other opportunities.

Finding the Right Fit

To find a job that suits your preferences and skills, you have a lot of agency in tailoring your profile and interaction in the direction you are hoping to go.

  1. Know what you want: Are you looking for part-time or full-time work? Do you prefer working with infants, toddlers, or older kids? Knowing what you want can help narrow down your search and make it clear to families that you are confident in your search.

  2. Set a competitive rate: Research the average pay rates in your area to ensure you're offering a competitive but fair rate. Factor in your experience and special skills.

  3. Highlight your skills and experiences: Make sure your profile showcases your skills, experiences, and any additional certifications you have. This information can make you more appealing to potential employers. Many platforms offer badges for CPR certification, background checks, etc. to make you instantly stand out.

  4. Communicate openly: Be clear about your expectations, like working hours, responsibilities, and time off, to avoid misunderstandings later.

A mindful search yields the best results

It can be frustrating to weed through piles of old job listings or apply to a job with 50 other caregivers, especially if you are paying for a membership. However, if you are looking for a long-term, quality job as a nanny, it’s often worth putting in the time and effort up front. By crafting a thorough profile, knowing what you’re looking for, and doing your due diligence when communicating with a family on an online platform, you are more likely to find a fulfilling nanny job and a family that’s right for you.
