The best on-demand babysitting platforms for urban families

where to find on-call urban babysitters

Sometimes you know you need a babysitter three weeks from Saturday. Sometimes it's Wednesday afternoon and you just found out you need one tomorrow.

For families making their home in the bigger cities, finding on-demand childcare isn't only about finding someone who's technically available. You may need a sitter who can confidently take two kids on the subway, manage a stroller up a walk-up, handle school pickup without a car, or entertain a preschooler in a small apartment while you're working from the bedroom.

When you haven't met your sitter before, experience and vetting matter. You need someone who can walk in, understand the instructions, and handle the particular logistics of city life without needing you to manage the entire afternoon from afar.

So which platforms and services are actually useful when you need a sitter tomorrow? Keep scrolling, we’ve got you.

What makes an on-demand babysitting service work?

There are two questions worth asking: How quickly can I get someone? And who exactly is going to show up? (Now, at the start of this experience, you may ask these questions in terror, but don’t worry, once you’re a seasoned babysitter-hiring-parent, you’ll ask them confidently with the answer already at hand.)

Some platforms give you access to a large database of caregivers, but you still need to post, message, interview and choose someone. Others maintain a pool of caregivers who have already been vetted and are ready to take occasional jobs.

For urban parents, look for:

  • Short-notice availability. Can you reasonably request tomorrow (or even today!?)?

  • Meaningful vetting. Has someone actually screened the caregiver, or are you in charge of the vetting, relying on a profile and an online background check

  • Experienced sitters. Can they confidently win over your kiddo and take on an unknown routine without extensive hand-holding, no matter what you throw at them?

  • Urban know-how. Public transit, apartment living, playgrounds, school pickups and WFH parents are all part of the job – is this candidate city savvy enough for the job?

  • Continuity. If your kids love someone, can you easily request that sitter again?

With those priorities in mind, here are five options worth considering.

Best on-demand babysitting platforms and services

Smart Sitting

Smart Sitting's Always On program is specifically built around occasional, backup and flexible care. Families have access to fully screened SmartSitters and can either have a Family Specialist curate a booking or use the app themselves. Once you've found sitters your family loves, you can build a preferred roster and request them again.

And as for making it in the big city? Smart Sitting was founded in New York City over 15 years ago and mainly serve large cities across the country, to city savvy is our bread-and-butter. Our caregivers come from a vetted nanny and sitter community accustomed to stepping into different family situations and getting up to speed quickly.

Pros: Thoroughly screened caregivers comfortable with the demands of urban gigs, human support, short-term and emergency care, easy repeat bookings and the ability to build a trusted sitter roster.

Things to consider: This is a higher-touch agency service rather than an open national marketplace, and availability is concentrated in the metropolitan areas Smart Sitting serves.

UrbanSitter

UrbanSitter is one of the stronger marketplace options specifically for last-minute care. Families can post a request and hear from available sitters, and average response time for last-minute requests is under two minutes in most cities (at least according to UrbanSitter). Caregivers receive annual background checks and profile reviews, and parents can see reviews, repeat-family numbers and community connections before choosing.

Pros: Built for quick searching and booking, strong local/community information, background-checked sitters and same-day availability in many markets.

Things to consider: You're still choosing the sitter yourself. A fast response to your posting isn't the same as an agency personally knowing the caregiver or selecting someone for your family's particular needs, and waiting for a more desirable candidate can be much longer than UrbanSitter’s proclaimed 2-minute response time.

Pinch Sitters

Pinch Sitters is an interesting option for New York City families specifically because it has specialized in on-call babysitting in the city for more than 35 years. Rather than giving parents a large database to search, Pinch matches families with vetted, experienced sitters from its own NYC caregiver pool. It serves Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and parts of the Bronx, and families needing care within four hours can contact the agency directly.

Pros: Truly short-notice care, experienced and vetted sitters, NYC-specific expertise, agency matching and the ability to request favorite sitters again.

Things to consider: Pinch is hyper-local by design. That's an advantage if you're in downtown NYC, but it isn't an option for urban families elsewhere. And because the agency makes the match, parents who prefer browsing profiles and personally choosing from a large pool may prefer a marketplace-style platform.

Care.com

Care.com has an enormous caregiver marketplace and specifically lets parents search for last-minute babysitters. That scale can be a major advantage in a large city where the candidate pool is large, particularly if you're comfortable reviewing profiles and contacting caregivers yourself. However, the process to finding sitters you like and working up your roster will be time consuming, unless you’re comfortable hiring someone directly off of an online profile (which we frankly do not recommend).

Note: Care.com also offers a corporate Backup Care benefit, and if your employers offers this service, you’ll be able to request background-checked, on-demand sitters at the last minute.

Pros: Huge pool of caregivers and broad geographic reach; employer-sponsored Backup Care can be particularly useful for working parents.

Things to consider: On the regular marketplace, finding profiles is only the beginning. You still need to evaluate candidates and make the hiring decision yourself, which may not be what you want when tomorrow's childcare just fell through.

Bambino

Bambino takes a neighborhood-oriented approach. Parents can browse caregivers and send booking requests directly, or post a job so interested local sitters can respond. Profiles include experience, family reviews, community connections, verification information and background-check status where applicable.

Pros: Simple local booking model, community recommendations and the ability to quickly send a request to nearby caregivers.

Things to consider: Parents remain responsible for deciding which sitter to hire, and a full background check is not necessarily standard for every sitter, as they are optional.

And parents, finding a sitter tomorrow shouldn't mean lowering your standards

On-demand childcare will always involve some uncertainty: availability changes, kids get sick and your favorite sitter won't necessarily be free every Thursday night.

But speed doesn't have to mean starting from scratch every time – and it doesn’t mean you have to accept just any-old person off the street who promises to make sure your child is at least alive and maybe fed by the end of the day.

A good on-demand setup gives you access to caregivers who are ready for the realities of your family's life, and ideally lets you turn a great first-time sitter into someone familiar. For city families especially, that can mean the difference between finding someone who can supervise your children and finding someone you genuinely trust to take the reins.

Ready for Always On?

Always On sounds a lot like a city that doesn’t sleep, doesn’t it? And that's what Smart Sitting's Always On program is designed for. It is available when you need it, and ready to take on any challenge of the city.

We know our SmartSitters, we’ve checked their references and experience and gotten to know where they’re a real good fit. In turn, they're accustomed to walking into busy urban households and getting up to speed at the drop of a hat. Once you’re set-up, you can easily control the whole process right from your phone without wait, and anytime you find someone your kids click with, add them to your preferred roster so they're first people to get your request next time.

Because needing childcare tomorrow shouldn't mean spending tonight trying to figure out who you can trust. Click the button below, tell us a bit about yourself and your family, and we’ll take it from there.
